Scrappy to the rescue!

I signed up for the Schnitzel and Boo mini quilt swap. (So did hundreds of other people. Lol)  I had never made a mini and was super excited to make one - and to #makeaquiltmakeafriend. I got my partner email and we seemed to have lots in common, like fabric designers and quilters we like- but she likes rainbow. I have never made anything rainbow before. Perhaps that stems from the ROYGBV requirements of my previous job. 😩 😉.
I always love rainbows other people make, but I have just never tried it out. So I knew that I had to give it a go.
After finding out standard sizes for minis (about 12 in to 24in - though some people include smaller sizes like mugrug size) I went looking for a pattern to use. I found Elizabeth Hartman's octagonal orb block. It was PERFECT for my mini!!
I ended up being able to use all scraps for the triangle portions.

I think I liked it before I ever sewed anything together.

Then $#!% got real. It's gorgeous.

No bragging. I just love this. I can't believe how it came out.
I think I love rainbow now.
And I am wondering why I had to be so selfless, first to use scraps I do not have any more of (for a stranger) and second to give this away (to a stranger). I hope I really do have a new friend when this is over. 😜.
In truth, I have made many new friends on IG.
I can't wait to finish everything and mail it all off!

  2. I know what you mean, I made a colour wheel quilt (I just posted about it, actually) and I loved it (like you, not bragging). I nearly didn't want to give it away, but, at the same time, was excited to be giving it away. Luckily my friend loved it, so it felt great to give it away. I'm sure your new friend will love yours, too. I'd say you've made a friend for life now :)

  3. Oh that is gorgeous - and you have some really beautiful scraps in there! Hopefully now that the rainbow bug has bitten you might get to make one to keep!

  4. This rainbow is indeed quite beautiful. I like how you made it stand out with black and white fabric.

  5. Bravo. I'm glad you were able to find a way to step over the hurdle of never having made one, now you have and can push further with confidence that the end result will be great! I just recently came across the #makeaquiltmakeafriend on IG and love the idea of it. I'm not really sure how it was organized, but would love to participate in something along these lines in the future. Thanks for sharing!
